Being born again: understand what it means (biblical reflection)
Being born again means having a life change so radical that it is as if you were being born again, erasing your old life. Jesus said that only those who are born again can enter Heaven. The new birth happens when you believe in Jesus as your savior.
InJohn 3:3, Jesus explained to a man named Nicodemus that one must be born again to enter the Kingdom of God. Nicodemus was confused and asked how a grown man could return to his mother's womb. Jesus then explained to him that this new birth is spiritual (John 3:5-6).
Being born again means a new life
The Bible says that whoever does not have Jesus is dead in their sins. We are alive, but spiritually, we are all dead (Ephesians 2:1-2). Sin separates us from God, and without God, our spirit dies. Therefore, we all need a new life.
Being born again means being united again with God, the source of all life. So our spirit comes back to life (Colossians 2:13-15). We received a new life!
How to be born again
The Bible shows us that, to be born again, you just need to believe in Jesus as your savior!
Jesus died on the cross to take the punishment you deserved for your sins (John 3:16). Alone, you cannot pay the price and would be condemned to an eternity separated from God.
But when you believe in Jesus and repent of your sins, it is as if you died with Jesus on the cross and your old life is erased. Together with Jesus, you too are resurrected to a new life!
Jesus offers this new life for free. You don't need to do anything else to be born again. Just accept God's gift.
A different life
Being born again implies the end of the old life. When we are born again, we also die… to sin. Now we live for God, no longer under the slavery of sin (Romans 6:11).
Can we continue to live the old way after we are born again? No! Jesus freed us from sin, we can no longer live in slavery. The mark of someone who is truly born again is their fight against sin and their dedication to the things of God.
